What is retention?

What is Retention?
Retention is how long the eye lash extension lasts on the natural lashes. There is no exact time for eye lash extensions to last as everyone has a different lash/growth cycle. This all depends on health, climate change or if your client is stressed or it can be due to hormones. There are a few things that us lash techs can do to help with retention issues.
Ways to help
1.Making sure your adhesives are always fresh.
From the moment you open your adhesive bottle, it begins to slowly degrade. With every opening moisture is entering and weakening the glue strength. Changing your glue every 30 days to keep its strength will help you with better retention. This may mean you are throwing away a half empty bottle sometimes if you are not remarkably busy that month but think of it as not throwing away but keeping your clients by giving them the best chance of longer lasting lashes.
2. Room temperature/humidity
Room temperature and humidity play a big part with retention. It is important that you are using the correct adhesive for your room (you will find more information in talking adhesive)
3. Ensure your adhesive is stored correctly
We advise to store your glue in an upright position with the lid on tight in a small airtight container with an oxygen absorber to prevent moisture build up. Unfortunately, even with your glue lid on moisture can still creep in. When your adhesive goes bad you will generally not be able to tell as the extension will still stick to the natural lash but will not last long and may flick off when brushing through your application.
4. Having a good cleaning/priming routine
It is important to have a thorough cleaning routine before your application. Making sure your client does not have any mascara, eye liner, moisturiser, or oily based products on or around the eyes before application. Any of these things left on your client’s eye can affect your client’s retention. Once cleansed using a primer to get rid of any extra oils left in the natural lash to help the extensions stick. Focusing on the base of the natural lash when applying your primer will help.
5. Clients having at home cleaning routine
Advise your client to clean their lashes at home 4 times a week. This will help with their retention and make your job as a lash tech easier for infills. Proper eye lash shampoo should only be used. A $25-$35 lash shampoo that will last your client roughly 4-6 months will save them money by having their lashes last longer.
